WSBK RD 2 Review

RACE 1:

Race 1 from Thailand started with Michael Van Der Mark on pole, Tom Sykes in 2nd and 12832543_1738916583011529_7857330733092764145_nJohnny Rea in 3rd. Van Der Mark had trouble getting his honda off the line getting swamped by the pack into the first few corners.Sykes and Johnny both got strong starts
with Johnny leading into the first corner.
Johnny makes a slight mistake and runs wide into the last corner allowing Sykes to take advantage and take the lead.Van Der Mark had worked his way up to 3rd after his bad start and was closing in on the leaders. The front three brokeaway leaving the two Ducatis to battle over 4th place.

Van Der Mark had closed right up to the back wheel of Johnny putting him under pressure looking for a way through but unfortuntely a mistake on lap 15 ran him wide and cost him over 2 seconds. After the race Van Der Mark said that the bikes electronics had a slight error and the bikes onboard computer lost itself on the track causing him to much engine braking and running wide.

That mistake from Van Der Mark left the two Kawasakis to battle for the win.Sykes had a slight advantage but Johnny chipped away at that every lap till with 7 laps to go he made 12814658_975309345898552_8977542035493571823_nan error and ran wide in the same corner as Van Der Mark not losing as much time.Johnny regrouped and closed back in on Sykes and with 5 laps to go he made his move going up the inside into the last corner. Chaz Davies and Davide Guigliano had been locked in a race long battle but with 2 laps to go Guigliano fell going in very hot into the last corner leaving Davies to finish in a lonely 4th place.

Johnny kept his lead till the end of the race fending off a last lap charge from Sykes to claim his 68th WSBK podium and 32nd race win. Van Der Mark rounded out the podium finishing 3rd 2 seconds behind the Kawasaki battle. Nicky Hayden was forced to retire with 10 laps to go an engine fault with his Honda seemed to be the issue.

Race 2:

A similar start to Race 2 Michael Van Der Mark managed to get away with the12821376_1209231442438001_4375875233121788139_n Kawasakis this time and managed to get into the 1st corner in 2nd place just behind Tom Sykes and in front of Johnathan Rea. Johnny passed Van Der Mark in the 2nd corner opening a slight gap for Chaz Davies to follow unfortunately for him Van Der Mark closed the door. Both riders collided but luckily both stayed on their bikes.

On lap 5 the Kawasakis broke away opening up a 1.5 second gap on Van Der Mark and Davies. Johnny started stalking Sykes closing the gap and putting pressure on him. Davies passed Van Der Mark with a lovely move into turn 3 on lap 10. Johnny made a speculative pass on Sykes into turn 4 but couldnt make it stick but managed not to lose much time even though he ran off the track. With 9 laps to go Davies really started to close up on the leaders Sykes pace seemed to be holding up Johnny at this stage their pace dropped by almost a second.

Johnny took the lead from Sykes on lap 12 and looked to put some distance between him and his team mate unfortunately  he made a mistake into turn one and allowed Davies and Sykes through. With 5 laps to go Johnny moved back past Davies into 2nd and looked to hunt down his team mate.12670778_1119507551417498_4058238308869729699_n

With 2 laps to go the leaders were tight together Sykes leading from Rea and Davies halfway through the lap Johnny and Sykes swapped positions twice in 2 corners. A back and forward last lap between Sykes and Johnny eventually ended with Sykes crossing the line 1st from Johnny in 2nd and Davies in 3rd.

A cracking race from the SBK guys some fans will be happy that Sykes has stopped Johnny’s dominance but with  3 firsts and a second place im sure Johnny wont be
displeased with his start to the season. Davies had a much better race but the Ducati just lacked the top end power to make anything work vs the Kawasakis.
