WSBK RD 9 Review

Race 1 Review:

WSBK 66 TS A

Tom Sykes took the pole position with Johnny Rea 2nd and Davide Guigliano 3rd  Davies was starting 4th. Rea got a great start but lost the lead in turn one to Sykes and lost another place to Davies in turn 3 nearly colliding with the 2 Ducatis. Hayden started his home race well getting up to 5th with Alex Lowes in 6th and Savadori who had never raced at Laguna seca before 7th.The front 3 of Sykes,Davies and Rea were setting the pace and breaking away from Guigliano in 4th place.

Davies took the lead from Sykes passing him into turn 2 with a harsh move pushing Sykes wide allowing Rea through on him as well.Davies lost the front of his Ducati going into turn 6 all but ending any hopes he had at the title this year. That crash from Davies gave Rea the lead with Sykes in 2nd and Davies team mate Guigliano closing up behind them due to all the passing the front guys had going on.

All the action in this race was very much at the front in the early stages of the race with the rest of the field a little spread out.Van Der Mark didnt seem to be able to translate the improved form he showed in Misano to a result here in Laguna running 7th the young Dutch man didnt seem to have the pace to run in the top 5.With 16 laps to go Rea seemed to have settled into his race pace setting lap after lap of similar lap times which he had been doing all through practice. Guigliano unfortunately did not have the pace to put Sykes under any pressure once he had settled down again after the passing of the previous few laps.

Lowes really closed up onto the back of Hayden in the fight for 4th place the english man finally back to full fitness after suffering a broken collarbone and is starting to show what the R1 and he is fully capable of.Torres was harrassing De angelis for 9th place Torres the only man seemingly capable of getting the BMW to word on a regular basis with the Milwaukee squad struggling to get their bikes working.

Guigliano just like his team mate crashed out of the race this gave Hayden,Lowes and the hard charging Savadori the chance to fight for the podium.Sykes seemed to have re grouped and closed onto the back wheel of his team mate with 12 laps to go.The fight for 3rd was now a 4 way battle with Van Der Mark joining the battle finding some great pace in the latter stage of the race.

Sykes took the lead with 9 laps to go after a mistake from Rea at the top of the corkscrew running the bike in a bit to deep. Rea re took the lead with 6 laps to go with a great move into turn 2 this race was turning into a real battle between the Kawasaki team mates.Van Der Mark had moved into 5th and was harrassing Lowes for 4th place Savadori had lost touch with the group Hayden was still at the front of the battle showing great composure that you would expect from the former moto gp champion.

WSBK 1 JR E4 Laps to go and Rea had opened up a 1 second lead over Sykes as he tried to send a message to his team mate about who was in charge of the championship.Van Der Mark made a move on Lowes for 4th place as it seemed Lowes had no more pace left to challenge Hayden for the podium it was now down to the two factory hondas for the final podium place.Going onto the last lap Rea had a comfortable lead over Sykes the real battle was behind them between Hayden and Van Der Mark for 3rd place.

Rea came across the line for the win another commanding win for the Championship leader extending his lead out to 71 points over Sykes he has also lead the championship for the last 40 races in WSBK. Hayden completed the podium a great result for the American at his home round he finished just ahead of his team mate who was 4th Lowes stayed 5th and Savadori came home 6th in his first time at Laguna Seca.

Race 2:

WSBK 34 DG B

The first part of the race was red flagged Guigliano had a comfotable lead at the time from Sykes and Rea with Davies sitting just behind them in 4th place. It was a crash by Pawel Szkopek at turn 6 that caused the red flag he was taken to hospital but was moving and waving to the crowd.Non Starters for the restarted race 2 would be Josh Brookes who crashed out Leon Camier who was forced to retire due to a mechanical fault and of course Pawel Szkopek was was the cause of the red flag.

Guigliano took the lead in turn one forcing Sykes to sit up this also messed up Rea who got passed by Hayden,Davies dropped to 6th after the start he and Rea the biggest losers on the restart. Rea got passed Hayden on the exit of the corkscrew and set about chasing his team mate and Guigliano down at the front.

Savadori crashed out of 5th place the he was ahead of Davies at the time and holding him off well. Rea passed both Guigliano and Sykes going into the corkscrew but was repassed WSBK 7 CD Dby Sykes on the exit as the two Kawasaki looked set to battle for the win, Rea re took the lead in turn 2 from Sykes but he ran wide in turn 6 and was very lucky to stay on the bike coming back on track in 10th.Rea retired with 15 laps to go Sykes was starting to break away at the front and Davies had regrouped to 3rd place. Hayden was running 4th but was being pressured by a whole group behind him.

Xavi Fores took over 4th place from Hayden as Lowes Torres Van Der Mark and Canepa all fought it out for 6th place just behind them. Torres again the only man to get the BMW to work well moved up to 6th place the Spanish rider showing good form as he set about chasing Hayden and Fores down. Guigliano closed right onto the back wheel of Sykes Davies didnt seem to have the pace of the front 2 guys but was comfortable in 3rd place. Guigliano and Davies both looked to have more tyre life left with 6 laps of the race to go Guigliano looking for a way past Sykes at every corner. Davies took over second place Guigliano as the Welsh man looked to have far more pace and looked to hunt down Sykes for the win but Guigliano re took the position from him later in the lap. The two Ducatis started to trip each other up who started to drag out the lead with 2 laps to go.

WSBK 66 TS FSykes took the win from Guigliano and Davies in 3rd Fores finished 4th and Hayden came home 5th. With Rea not finishing that closes the gap to 46 points still a comfortable lead but not as healthy as it should of been for the Northern Ireland man
